Is it OK to say, `He was given an yellow card’?

No, it is not. Players are shown `a’ yellow card, and not `an’ yellow one. Many words beginning with the letter `y’ are preceded by ‘a’. For example, you say, `a young man’, `a yard’, and `a year’.
